This simple device is responsible for controlling the flow of hot liquid through the heater and, consequently, the intensity of the heat and air temperature entering the cabin. The valves are subject to intensive use, constantly closing and opening while driving.
Their importance does not result only from the fact that they adjust the flow of the coolant. What matters is what happens if they fail. If that is the case, two scenarios are possible. Firstly, the car cabin may cease to be heated altogether. Secondly, coolant leaks may appear near the heater.
The most common cause of heater valve failures is driver’s errors
The valves are indeed simple. However, they are heavily exploited. Interestingly, their failures rarely result from their wear and tear and are usually attributed to external factors, such as clogging with deposits precipitated from water or transported within the cooling system, or from insufficient quality of the coolant itself.
