The engine is not the only element requiring cooling. Equally important is the cooling of the air entering the combustion chamber of a turbocharged engine. This is crucial for one simple reason. Hot air is thinner and, consequently, less caloric from the point of view of the fuel mixture combustion process. Its presence significantly impairs the performance of the engine while increasing its fuel consumption. Air cooling gives the driver measurable benefits and is very important from the point of view of the toxicity of the exhaust gas emitted into the atmosphere, that is, the ecological aspects of the engine.
Why is the air inside the inlet system hot? Well, it is pressure-pumped into the hoses by the turbocharger, which can heat to even 1000 degrees centigrade. This is why intercoolers are mounted not at the beginning of the inlet system, but between the compressor and the engine chamber. They are applied both in diesel and petrol engines.
Intercooler types
From the technology point of view, air coolers also referred to as intercoolers, can be divided into two types. The first type is cooled by air exactly the same way as the radiator. The other type features a coolant system. The most common one is the first type, as it is simpler, much more durable, and cheaper to install.
